Because, in theory, Australia has everything needed to succeed (and build a whole new Future Industry).
Are you dependent on backing from Australia? Have you thought about building SHRMP.bio somewhere else?
Since the beginning, we have been asked these questions, often reflecting on the "deeptech" and biotech vision behind SHRMP.bio, along with the associated time and capital needs and their perceived potential cultural misfit in Australia.
No, we have not.
Maybe there is irony in this:
It is specifically our Australian experience and a strategic perspective that kicked off our interest in the Blue Economy and led us to develop the idea behind SHRMP.bio.
Australia is part of Oceania and is truly "girt by sea." It has one of the longest coastlines in the world.
And not only do we have a lot of oceans, we also have large areas of deserts.
Or, looked at in another way:
We have large spaces of harsh environments that illustrate the climate challenges most countries have yet to experience.
This should provide ideal conditions for developing and testing technologies and businesses here that will have significant future export potential.
In addition to deserts and oceans, Australia boasts excellent R&D institutions across various high-tech sectors. The country is developing a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and culture, with significant financial resources available.
Globally, interest in sustainability and the blue economy has steadily increased, leading even to the emergence of "blue washing."
Funding an initiative like the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Aquaculture Futures should be an obvious decision.
And a Blue Industry should be one of Australia's most obvious future growth industries — one of the few sectors where we have a clear geographical advantage to be competitive internationally.
And even if the Blue Economy alone doesn’t inspire excitement,
SHRMP.bio is as much Biotechnology as it is high-tech Modern Manufacturing
- topics that more frequently appear in government press releases and newspaper headlines than Ocean technologies.
And for all these reasons, Australia should also be the ideal home for SHRMP.bio.
